Ingredients
For the Brownies:
½ cup unsalted butter, melted
1 cup granulated sugar
2 large eggs
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
⅓ cup unsweetened cocoa powder
½ cup all-purpose flour
¼ teaspoon salt
¼ teaspoon baking powder
1 teaspoon instant espresso powder (optional, enhances chocolate flavor)
For the Coffee Frosting:
½ cup unsalted butter, softened
2 cups powdered sugar
1 tablespoon instant coffee granules
2–3 tablespoons heavy cream or milk
Pinch of salt
Optional Add-Ins:
½ cup chopped pecans or walnuts
½ cup chocolate chips
¼ teaspoon cinnamon for a warm mocha twist
Instructions
Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease or line an 8×8-inch baking pan with parchment paper.
Melt butter in a medium saucepan over low heat. Remove from heat and stir in sugar until glossy.
Add eggs one at a time, whisking well after each addition. Stir in vanilla extract.
Sift in cocoa powder, flour, salt, and baking powder. Mix gently until combined — do not overmix.
(Optional) Stir in espresso powder for a mocha flavor boost.
Pour batter into the prepared pan and spread evenly.
Bake for 30–35 minutes, or until edges are set and a toothpick inserted in the center comes out with moist crumbs.
Cool completely on a wire rack before frosting.
For the Coffee Frosting:
Dissolve instant coffee granules in warm cream or milk. Set aside.
Beat butter until creamy and pale. Gradually add powdered sugar, then pour in the coffee mixture and a pinch of salt.
Whip until light, smooth, and spreadable. Adjust consistency with more cream if needed.
Frost cooled brownies and create soft swirls with the back of a spoon.
Notes
Don’t overbake — slightly underdone brownies are fudgier.
Chill brownies for 20 minutes before slicing for clean edges.
Store in an airtight container at room temperature for 3 days or refrigerate for up to 5.
Freeze (unfrosted) brownies for up to 3 months. Thaw overnight before frosting.
For a bakery-style touch, sprinkle cocoa powder or chocolate shavings over the frosting before serving.
